A month has already gone by since I first moved here. Time really flew!!
The temperature has gone down to 11°C and it's raining almost every day, but the colors of the trees are amazing.

But I still miss you.

Un mese è già passato da quando mi sono trasferita qui. Il tempo è volato!!

Fuori la temperatura si è abbassata a 11°C e piove quasi tutti i giorni, ma i colori sugli alberi sono meravigliosi.

Nonostante ciò, mi manchi.

This past weekend I went to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, european capital of culture in 2011 and birthplace of SKYPE. It's only two hours away from Helsinki, right across the Baltic Sea.

I went with a group of friends and spent the night in a very cool hostel, The Dancing Eesti, which was absolutely awesome! Well, it's not a 4 star hotel, and I've never been in a hostel before, so don't know how it should be, but I loved the fact that it had a bar in it with cheap drinks and the staff was really helpful. One complaint could be that it's in a very noisy location during the night, but I didn't mind. We went to Tallinn to have fun, visit a new place and be adventures, not to be posh tourists!

I guess I am starting to get used to finnish people and their way of life because when it came time to go out at night in Tallinn the first thing I noticed was that people are really loud. Not only, but there were a lot of people in the streets, which I am is not usual in Helsinki, at least now that it's getting cooler at night.
Tallinn is a small medieval "village", even though it's actually a capital. I've never been to eastern european countries, but Estonia gave me a feeling of being one of them, more than a baltic country. Prices are cheaper than Finland (but any place is cheaper then Finland!) and McDonald is cheaper then Italy (4.20 euro for a meal).
On our tour of the city we tried real estonian pancakes, at Kompressor, a cheap place that served this speciality, which actually really looks like a french crepe.

We also climbed up what was the tallest building between 1549 and 1625, St. Olaf's Church's steeple, and believe me... those were a lot of stairs to climb to have this view:

We surly deserved a beer afterwards and chose to go to Hell Hunt, where the boys were happy to catch up on some soccer game that was going on (sorry, football for the english people).

Why do people go to Tallinn in the first place? This is why.

People like to get drunk here without spending their whole salary, or they just buy cartons and cartons of beer to take back home (in Helsinki a beer can cost you 6 euro if you don't know where to find a cheaper one!).

Curious to visit the capital of Estonia now? I wouldn't mind going back, it's a really nice place.

Questo fine settimana sono andata a Tallinn, la capitale dell'Estonia, capitale europea della cultura nel 2011 e luogo di nascita di SKYPE. E' solo a due ore di traghetto da Helsinki, dall'altra parte del Mar Baltico.


Sono andata con un gruppo di amici e ha trascorso la notte in un ostello molto bello, The Dancing Eesti, che era assolutamente fantastico! Beh, non è un hotel 4 stelle, e non sono mai stata in un ostello prima, quindi non so come dovrebbe essere, ma ho apprezzato il fatto che aveva un bar con bevande economiche e il personale era davvero disponibile. Una critica potrebbe essere che si trova in una posizione molto rumorosa durante la notte, ma poco male. Siamo andati a Tallinn per divertirci, visitare un posto nuovo e fare esperienze, per non essere turisti snob!



Mi sa che sto cominciando ad abituarmi al modo di fare dei finlandesi, perché quando è arrivato il momento di uscire la sera a Tallinn la prima cosa che ho notato è che la gente era davvero rumorosa. 

Non solo, ma c'erano un sacco di persone per le strade, il che non è tipico a Helsinki, almeno adesso che inizia a fare più freddo di notte.


Tallinn è un piccolo "borgo" medievale anche se in realtà è una capitale. Non sono mai stata a paesi dell'Europa dell'Est, ma l'Estonia mi ha dato la sensazione di essere uno di questi, più che un paese baltico.

I prezzi sono più convenienti rispetto alla Finlandia (ma qualsiasi posto è più conveniente della Finlandia!), e McDonald è più conveniente dell'Italia (4,20 euro per un menù). 
Durante il nostro giro per la città abbiamo mangiato le vere "frittelle estoni", al Kompressor, che in realtà sembravano crepe francesi farcite con qualsiasi cosa. Siamo anche saliti su quello che un tempo è stato l'edificio più alto tra il 1549 e 1625, il campanile della chiesa di San Olaf, e credetemi... erano un sacco di salire le scale da fare vedere la città dall’alto.



E dopo la faticata ci siamo meritati una birra al Hell Hunt pub, dove i ragazzi sono stati felici di vedere un po' di calcio.



Perché le persone scelgono di andare a Tallinn? Il motivo è l’alcol. E io sono riuscita a trovare del vino…. Valpollicella e Soave! 



Alla gente piace ubriacarsi qui senza spendere l'intero stipendio, o semplicemente vogliono comprare cartoni e cartoni di birra da portare a casa (a Helsinki, una birra può costare 6 € se non sai dove trovarne una più economica!).



Siete curiosi di visitare la capitale dell'Estonia, adesso? A me non dispiacerebbe tornarci.

The main reason why I posted the video of the university here the other day was because of the stress they put on the importance of education. 

When I first arrived here I was impressed by the architecture of the buildings, so modern and clean. All wood and glass. I study in Kumpulan campus, which is about 20 minutes by bus from my house. It's a real campus, with several departments and faculties, a sport centre, several cafeterias, and lots of green areas. Just so you get the picture, the student's office is in a botanical garden!

Anyway, as you might have noticed for the pictures I uploaded, the whole complex is quite nice and efficient. A friend yesterday told me "the cold makes people efficient!". It actually does! One basic and simple screen in the entrance hall that shows when the next bus comes is one of the most clever ideas I've seen so far here. Of course, it's too cold to sit outside and wait in the wintertime. But why has nobody ever thought of it in Italy? I mean, it's not just useful to avoid the cold, but also to avoid rain for example.

I'll talk about the cafeteria an other time, when I'll introduce you to finnish "cuisine". About the sport's centre, there's a lot to say!! First of all it's extremely cheap! 10 euro fee for a month to get group training, entrance to the gym, sauna and free access to a climbing wall. No wonder I've been going everyday (by the way, Zumba is super cool!!)!! Then again, in the video it said that finnish people believe in free education AND health.

About my actual internship... well, there is A LOT to say! (This will be a very long post).

I am attending two classes, one is called Interactive Systems, and the other is a Seminar. You can check out the links to them, to know what they are actually about. For the first one, my group work consists of creating an app for mobile phones so that people can easily access different applications while walking. The main idea behind it is to avoid the "heads down" interaction, where people actually risk hurting themselves by looking constantly at their phones instead of where they're walking. Of course I cannot program so I just helped getting the ideas and the visual concept. For the seminar, instead, I am (was) working on how to obtain data from the mobile phone so that it would know where I am, e.g. on the bus, in the car, etc... and adjust accordingly. This project is actually to complex for my skills, and there isn't much that I can do to help, so I will be following it from a distance. 
To all the people that ask me WHY ON EARTH I am doing my training in Computer Science when I am actually studying Psychology, well here is the answer: I believe that if you want to work in a particular field (in my case, ergonomics) you actually have to know quite a bit of how things work, not just from your "professional" point of view, but also from the point of view of who works with you and that isn't in your field, i.e. computer scientists! It is really fascinating and I decided I will probably learn some basics on programming, because I have the feeling here I don't know how to do absolutely anything.

My training is not just attending classes though. I've worked at HIIT (check out the link!) for an experiment on interactions with multi-touch tables. Have you ever seen one? Ever played with one? They are actually quite cool. It's like a huge ipad and, together with a Kinect, it can do some really cool stuff. So you get an idea of what I was working on (I really can't tell much more for the moment) check out this video. It's a multi-touch screen that was in the city of Helsinki a few years ago as an experiment conducted by HIIT.

Furthermore, my training includes also paper research. I've been reading lots of scientific papers on several topics 1. to become aware of what people are working on around the world and 2. because when writing a paper you always have to go through all the related papers that have been written!

Ok, I think this is enough for an update on what I'm actually doing up here! As you can see, my days are quite busy, but the weekend are usually free so I get a chance to see places! This weekend it´s going to be......................... TALLIN!! :D

Oh, one last thing... Remember I had told you about news I was waiting for this week? Well, the good new arrived!! I will actually be paid to do my internship! Being used to the italian system, I was surprised when I discovered that in Finland trainees MUST be paid. It actually does make sense though! So again, in Finland they really do care about your education!!

La ragione principale per cui ho postato il video dell'università qui l'altro giorno è stato per l'enfasi che hanno messo su l'importanza dell'istruzione.

Quando sono arrivata qui mi ha colpito l'architettura degli edifici, cosí moderni e puliti. Tutto in legno e vetro. Io studio al campus Kumpula, che dista circa 20 minuti di autobus da casa mia. E' un vero e proprio campus, con i vari dipartimenti e facoltà, un centro sportivo, mense, e un sacco di aree verdi. Solo per darvi un'idea, la segreteria studenti è in un giardino botanico!
Comunque, come avrete notato per le foto che ho caricato, l'intero complesso è molto bello e accogliente. Un amico ieri mi ha detto "il freddo rende le persone efficiente!". Lo fa davvero! Un semplice schermo nell'ingresso che mostra tra quando arriva il prossimo bus è una delle idee più intelligenti che ho visto finora qui. Naturalmente, fa troppo freddo per stare fuori e aspettare d'inverno. Ma perché nessuno non ci ha mai pensato in Italia? Voglio dire, non è solo utile per evitare il freddo, ma anche per evitare la pioggia, per esempio.

Parlerò della mensa in un altro momento, quando ti presento la cucina finlandese. Per quanto riguarda il centro sportivo, c'è molto da dire! Prima di tutto è estremamente a buon mercato! Costa solo 10 euro per un mese e poi partecipare ai corsi, entrare in palestra (per fare attrezi), sauna e accesso gratuito a una parete di arrampicata. Non c'è da stupirsi che vado tutti i giorni (a proposito, Zumba è super cool!!)!! Come veniva detto nel video, i finlandesi credono in un'istruzione e salute gratuita per tutti!
 

Che dire del mio tirocinio ... beh, c'è molto da dire! (Questo sarà un post molto lungo).Frequento due corsi, una si chiama Interactive Systems, e l'altro è un seminario. Per il primo, il mio lavoro di gruppo consiste nel creare un'applicazione per telefoni cellulari in modo che le persone possono accedere facilmente diverse applicazioni mentre si cammina. L'idea principale dietro di esso è di evitare l'effetto "testa bassa", in cui siamo costantemente attenti al nostro cellulare e non guardiamo dove camminiamo, rischiando di farci pure male. Naturalmente io non sono in grado di programmare quindi ho solo aiutato a ottenere le idee e il concetto visivo. Per il seminario, invece, sto (stavo) lavorando su come ottenere i dati dal telefono cellulare in modo che esso sappia dove sono, ad esempio, in autobus, in macchina, ecc .. e regolarsi di conseguenza. Questo progetto è effettivamente complesso per le mie capacità, e non posso fare molto, quindi lo seguiró a distanza.

 

A tutte le persone che mi chiedono PERCHE DIAVOLO sto facendo il mio tirocinio in informatica quando sto effettivamente studiando psicologia, ecco qui la risposta: credo che se si desidera lavorare in un campo particolare (nel mio caso, l'ergonomia) bisogna effettivamente saperecome funzionano le cose, non solo dal mio punto "professionale" di vista, ma anche dal punto di vista di chi lavora conme  e che non è nel mio campo, cioè gli informatici! E' davvero affascinante e ho deciso che probabilmente impararó alcune nozioni di base sulla programmazione, perché ho la sensazione qui non so fare assolutamente nulla.
 

Il mio tirocinio non consiste solo nel frequentare lezioni però. Ho lavorato al HIIT (Helsinki Institue for Information Techonology) su un esperimento sulle interazioni con piani multi-touch. Ne avete mai visto uno? Avete mai giocato con un tavolo multi-touch? Sono davvero belli. E' come un ipad enorme e, se unito ad un Kinect, si possono fare alcune cose davvero interessanti. In modo da avere un'idea su quello a cui stavo lavorando (non posso davvero dire molto di più per il momento) guardate questo video. Si tratta di un schermo multi-touch, installato nella città di Helsinki pochi anni fa come  esperimento condotto sempre da HIIT.

Inoltre, il mio tirocinio comprende anche ricerche bibliografiche. Ho letto un sacco di lavori scientifici su vari argomenti 1. per prendere coscienza di ciò a cui le persone stanno lavorando in tutto il mondo e 2. perché quando si scrive un articolo bisogna sempre controllare tutti i lavori giá pubblicati!

Ok, penso che questo sia sufficiente come spiegazione su quello che sto realmente facendo qui! Come potete vedere, le mie giornate sono molto piene, ma il fine settimana di solito sono liberi così ho tempo di girare! Questo fine settimana tocca a ......................... TALLIN! : D


Ah, un'ultima cosa ... Ricordate che avevo detto che stavo aspettando delle novità questa settimana? Beh, la buona notizia é arrivata! Il mio tirocinio verrá pagato! Abituata al sistema italiano, sono rimasta sorpresa quando ho scoperto che in Finlandia i tirocinanti DEVONO essere pagati. Ha davvero un senso però se ci pensate! Quindi, di nuovo, in Finlandia hanno davvero a cuore l'istruzione!

Ieri era il compleanno di mio fratello e l'unica cosa che riuscivo a pensare era quando da piccoli giocavamo insieme del bosco vicino a un torrente. 

Questo bambino che gioca a nascondino mi ricorda quei tempi.
