Ciao a tutti! Bentornati!

Spring is here!
.en
Hello everyone! Welcome back!
How are you all, around the world?
Here in Finland life is SUPER GREAT! At the beginning of April we had the last (hopefully!) snow storm. Luckily after easter, all the snow melted, the sun started to come out more often and the temperature is now above zero (average is between 5-10°C).
So, what have I been up to?? Work, lots and lots of work.
First of all, I have great news (for me, at least...): during the winter I was working on a research for a company and wrote a paper, a scientific paper. On April 2nd I got notified that it has been accepted to be presented at a conference in June!!!!!! I am super excited about it!!! I'm not sure what I want to do in my future, I'm thinking about doing a PhD and pursuing an academic career so to have a publication, before I have even graduated, well... it's amazing!
The conference is called EuroHaptics and it's in Tampere (Finland) from the 12-15 June. Unfortunately I won't be able to go because I have to work, but that's ok.
If you have been following the facebook group HTLab, you might have read that I started an online course from Stanford University on Game Theory. There's lots of math and logic and I don't have a lot of time to keep up with it, but it's going to be very useful for my thesis.
Next week I'll be teaching a class in a course I've been attending this semester, Human-Computer Interaction. The lecture will present the research I did this winter. Although I have experience at teaching, the students I've had were always young (up to high school) and I was giving them private lessons. Here, students are undergrads and they NEVER talk, even if you ask questions. Believe me, it's scary! You just keep wondering if you're saying boring stuff, if they're listening, if they notice you are nervous, etc.

As for my thesis, I started working on the plan and hopefully this next week we can start doing something more concrete. I won't explain now what I'll be doing, just to not jinx it! But since I'm starting so late, I will be staying here until the end of May. So, just a little over a month left...
Enough with work stuff though..
I haven't been travelling much in this second semester. Mostly because the weather was always cold, but also because I haven't had much time. Hopefully now that spring has arrived I can go around more, I really want to go to S. Petersburg, since it's so close!
I've been hanging out a lot with my work collegues and today we went to have a BBQ on an island. Wind aside, it was lovely! I'm adding pictures of the past few months (sorry for not updating!).

An other positive note of this country... the days have been getting longer and longer! Sun rises at 5:40 and sets at 21:00 but you can see the last traces of the sunset until 22:00!!! It's amazing! For now, I really like it, but I noticed that until it starts getting dark I don't stop working, which means it will be more difficult later on when the days will be even longer. Just in two weeks time the sun will set at 21:30 and in total we gain 1 hour and 10 minutes of light! I've never been used to this!
That's all for now!

spring break
.en
Time for a new update!
So, lots has happened in this month or so. Giovanni came to visit me with his sister and a friend, Stefano. I literally drained all their energy out to show them as much as I could of Helsinki in 5 days. We even went to Tallinn for one day! It's really nice to have friends visit you, to see familiar faces and share with them what you've been doing for the past 6 months. Plus, I got to be a tourist again in a city that I'm feeling like home. Look at the pictures here!
The downside of having friends visit is that you realize how much you miss you're hometown. I miss the food, the smells, I miss seeing the mountains at the horizon, I miss listening to the birds signing when spring arrives, I miss the sun, the warmth of the rays on my skin.
But that's what you get when you live in two different places. It will happen with Helsinki as well, and "depression post-erasmus" has already started, even though I'll be here for two more months still. When you have to say goodbye to your closest friends, part of your erasmus experience ends there too. Sebastiano left a week or so ago and I miss our dinners together, I miss having him at my place just for a coffee and a chat that lasted hours. I know I'll see him again, we live really close to each other in Italy, but it's not the same thing. I'm used to these long distance friendships, unfortunately.
University-wise I finally started working on my thesis project. The topic concerns weather communication is influenced by vibrotactile stimuli and if so, how. I'm still at the first stages of the plan, but it should be quite fascinating, especially because what we (me, other researchers and my two professors) want to investigate has never been studied before. Anyway, to know more about what I'll be doing or what I've done you can check the Facebook page of the Lab I work for in Padova: HTLab.
You can also "like it" if you want!
That's about all for now, my plans for the weekend are quite boring: cleaning and doing laundry (I might skip the last chore and just buy new clothes! :-P).
p.s. final flight back has been booked. Less the two months are left. :-(

p.s. volo di ritorno definitivo prenotato. Restano meno di due mesi. :-(

Fresh start
.en
The first week has gone by, I'm back on track working and aiming high. This break in Italy gave me a chance to really understand what I want from my life. Here I am, in Helsinki, working for the university, I've been given a huge opportunity and I don't want to waist it.
I've been spending my evenings learning basic stuff on how to program - I might as well learn something of what my colleagues are talking about if I want to eventually work in this field. What field? Human-Computer Interaction. During the day I run experiments on haptic perceptions and study finnish (I had forgotten how hard it is to learn a new language, grammar is so boring!).
Do I have time left to have fun? Yes, of course.
Last weekend I went on a cruise to Stockholm. I spent there about six hours, one of which inside the Nobel Prize Museum, my absolute favorite of all. I know I been to this city before, but I couldn't remember much. Fortunately pictures can help my memory! I realized I'm not a huge fan of cruises, as I still feel dizzy and sea-sick, even after 3 days on solid ground. I definitely prefer sail boats, where you can feel the breeze and the wind on your skin.
Do I have new year's resolutions? Yes.
Will I share them? No. They might not come true :)
Let me just say that I have big plans, big fat ambitious plans that hopefully will take me around the world again. What I know for sure is that my work has not gone unnoticed and yesterday I received a very unexpected yet well appreciated compliment from my italian master's thesis supervisor.

No. Potrebbero non avverarsi :)

2 mesi (italiano)
I divided this post in two so, for the english part, scroll down, it's in a separate post!

SETTIMANA 1Mio padre è venuto a trovarmi all'inizio di ottobre.
Buona fortuna!"

Ok, it's been a whole months since I've written and a lot has happened!
First of all I want excuse myself if it took me so long since I last wrote but I had some good reasons.
So, what have I been doing in Helsinki in the last 4 weeks?
WEEK 1
My dad came to visit at the beginning of October. He stayed for a couple of days and I had a chance to just tour around the city. I had a chance to eat some good food, drink lots of wine (which by the way I miss terribly!) and discover some new places, such as a café near the harbor. We also went to the cinema and saw two good movies: "Midnight in Paris" and "WinWin". I recommend both of them, especially the first one! Woody Allen never disappoints!
WEEK 2
The week after I had to catch up on some work, and basically I just had to keep calm. Why? Well, because I was planning a very big surprise!! My boyfriend, Gio, was going to graduate on Oct. 19th and I had told everyone that I couldn't make it............. but I had actually bought the flight tickets long before!
WEEK 3 - DAY 1
So on the 17th I woke up really early, took the bus to the airport, worked a bit for my internship, got on the plan, flew to Amsterdam, caught my connecting flight to Milan and landed in Italy at 4.55 pm. Then, took a bus to the central station, waited for an hour, got on the fast train and arrived in Verona at 9.30 pm. During all this, I pretended my finnish phone stopped working so I had an excuse to use my italian number. While I was on the train, just as I was trying to figure out how to surprise him, I got a message from his mom saying "He's off to the gym. It's in ___ (gave me the address). Good luck!" I was in seventh heaven!! (note: I had told his mom I was coming, I needed an abetter (new word for me!!)). So back to the train station in Verona, I took a taxi and we literally went looking for this new gym. The taxi driver was so nice, he told me it was 8 euro and then still went looking for the place, since it was so hidden. Well, I was sooo excited, I couldn't stop smiling all day. I gave 10 euro to the taxi driver, got off, hid my suitcase in the bushes and waited outside for Gio to come out. I thought it would take a few minutes, according to my plans he was almost finished training. I was so wrong! I ended up waiting for an hour and a half outside in the cold! My heart jumped every time the door opened and someone came out. When it was finally his turn, I very quietly said hi and smiled. He turned around and..... said hi and proceeded towards the car. Then turned back, realized and ran towards me!!
BEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE SO FAR!!!
The rest of the week went by quickly. I had to work most of the time which was a bummer, but it was really good being home! I got to see all my friends, go to the movies, eat delicious food including loads of pizza, sleep in, have fun, ride a motorcycle and much more.
GRADUATION DAY
I will sum up this day because I would have too much to say but the end note is that is was an AWESOME day!! He wasn't too anxious or nervous, but I was for him!! He had to discuss his thesis in front of group of professors and they chatted as if they were all colleagues! The topic was "Nuns' life in the Counter reformation" (he graduated in art history and now is continuing his MS in History).
He was then proclaimed "doctor" with the top grades!! 110 out of 110!! I'm so proud of him!
WEEK 4
I came back to Finland on the 25th and it was hard for the first days to get used to the silence again. But all the work I had to do, catching up with friends here, going out... it all helped.
I must say I also have amazing friends in Italy who would cheer me up by just sending me random sms just to say hi!

Now I'm working on a few projects for my internship. They all have something to do with mobile phones, haptic feedback, touch screens and multitouch surfaces so I guess this is also what my master's thesis will be on! Really cool and nerdy stuff!!
Again, I'm sorry for not updating in such a long time, I'll post more often from now on.
Enjoy your weekend where ever you all are!!

The main reason why I posted the video of the university here the other day was because of the stress they put on the importance of education.
When I first arrived here I was impressed by the architecture of the buildings, so modern and clean. All wood and glass. I study in Kumpulan campus, which is about 20 minutes by bus from my house. It's a real campus, with several departments and faculties, a sport centre, several cafeterias, and lots of green areas. Just so you get the picture, the student's office is in a botanical garden!
Anyway, as you might have noticed for the pictures I uploaded, the whole complex is quite nice and efficient. A friend yesterday told me "the cold makes people efficient!". It actually does! One basic and simple screen in the entrance hall that shows when the next bus comes is one of the most clever ideas I've seen so far here. Of course, it's too cold to sit outside and wait in the wintertime. But why has nobody ever thought of it in Italy? I mean, it's not just useful to avoid the cold, but also to avoid rain for example.
I'll talk about the cafeteria an other time, when I'll introduce you to finnish "cuisine". About the sport's centre, there's a lot to say!! First of all it's extremely cheap! 10 euro fee for a month to get group training, entrance to the gym, sauna and free access to a climbing wall. No wonder I've been going everyday (by the way, Zumba is super cool!!)!! Then again, in the video it said that finnish people believe in free education AND health.
About my actual internship... well, there is A LOT to say! (This will be a very long post).
To all the people that ask me WHY ON EARTH I am doing my training in Computer Science when I am actually studying Psychology, well here is the answer: I believe that if you want to work in a particular field (in my case, ergonomics) you actually have to know quite a bit of how things work, not just from your "professional" point of view, but also from the point of view of who works with you and that isn't in your field, i.e. computer scientists! It is really fascinating and I decided I will probably learn some basics on programming, because I have the feeling here I don't know how to do absolutely anything.
My training is not just attending classes though. I've worked at HIIT (check out the link!) for an experiment on interactions with multi-touch tables. Have you ever seen one? Ever played with one? They are actually quite cool. It's like a huge ipad and, together with a Kinect, it can do some really cool stuff. So you get an idea of what I was working on (I really can't tell much more for the moment) check out this video. It's a multi-touch screen that was in the city of Helsinki a few years ago as an experiment conducted by HIIT.
Furthermore, my training includes also paper research. I've been reading lots of scientific papers on several topics 1. to become aware of what people are working on around the world and 2. because when writing a paper you always have to go through all the related papers that have been written!
Ok, I think this is enough for an update on what I'm actually doing up here! As you can see, my days are quite busy, but the weekend are usually free so I get a chance to see places! This weekend it´s going to be......................... TALLIN!! :D
Oh, one last thing... Remember I had told you about news I was waiting for this week? Well, the good new arrived!! I will actually be paid to do my internship! Being used to the italian system, I was surprised when I discovered that in Finland trainees MUST be paid. It actually does make sense though! So again, in Finland they really do care about your education!!

Tutto in legno e vetro.

A
In

Scusate, è solo in inglese.

Week 1
.en
Today is Sunday, and it's been exactly one week since I moved to Helsinki. Time has flown!
I've arranged uni paper work, made my room look like home, toured the city, made new friends and started working for my internship and class projects.
Uni wise I'm doing some really cool stuff, but I'll talk about it further on, when things start getting some sort of shape and I figure out more in detail all that I'll be doing. For the moment I'm enjoying the novelty of everything, receiving emails with tasks to do, walking around the campus, going around the city to appointments and acting as if this could actually be my future job.
I'm posting a video of the entrance of one of the buildings where I go. I don't actually have classes there, but I prefer it to the entrance of my department so I always walk in through those doors!
Students here have all sorts of facilities they can use and opportunities. There is a section of the uni that is actually open 24/7 and you can access whenever you want once you get the electronic key. Coffee doesn't come from a machine, but from an actual bar. There is a sports center available at a very accessible price, where one can attend classes or just hit the gym, or even go rock climbing! I've also started a finnish course... why not learn the language as long as I am here?!
Two things I like the most about uni are: 1. the are no fees and 2. people actually encourage you to do only what you care to study and are interested in. Lots of students don't even finish their degree programs because they don't need that piece of paper here! What is important here is to learn, not to finish. There's a HUGE difference there!
On a more bittersweet note... I had a very hard goodbye to say this morning. My boyfriend, who came for the first week, left today. He helped me settle in, get used to the new city, the new house, the new "everything". We spent incredible days, walking around town, meeting randomly in uni, going out for dinner, chatting with other students and just being together. It's going to be hard to be so far away, but this is life and we will make the best out of this experience!!
So, on to the next week, where hopefully I will start to have a more predictable schedule!
