Fresh start

The first week has gone by, I'm back on track working and aiming high. This break in Italy gave me a chance to really understand what I want from my life. Here I am, in Helsinki, working for the university, I've been given a huge opportunity and I don't want to waist it.

I've been spending my evenings learning basic stuff on how to program - I might as well learn something of what my colleagues are talking about if I want to eventually work in this field. What field? Human-Computer Interaction. During the day I run experiments on haptic perceptions and study finnish (I had forgotten how hard it is to learn a new language, grammar is so boring!).


Do I have time left to have fun? Yes, of course.


Last weekend I went on a cruise to Stockholm. I spent there about six hours, one of which inside the Nobel Prize Museum, my absolute favorite of all. I know I been to this city before, but I couldn't remember much. Fortunately pictures can help my memory! I realized I'm not a huge fan of cruises, as I still feel dizzy and sea-sick, even after 3 days on solid ground. I definitely prefer sail boats, where you can feel the breeze and the wind on your skin.

Do I have new year's resolutions? Yes.
Will I share them? No. They might not come true :)

Let me just say that I have big plans, big fat ambitious plans that hopefully will take me around the world again. What I know for sure is that my work has not gone unnoticed and yesterday I received a very unexpected yet well appreciated compliment from my italian master's thesis supervisor.

La prima settimana è passata, e sono già tornata alla mia routine, lavorando e puntando in alto. Questa pausa in Italia mi ha dato la possibilità di capire cosa voglio dalla mia vita. Eccomi qui, a Helsinki, che lavoro per l'università. Mi è stata data una grandissima opportunità e non voglio sprecarla.

Trascorro le mie serate imparando l'abc della programmazione informatica - tanto vale capire di cosa parlano i miei colleghi se voglio un domani lavorare in questo campo. Quale campo? Interazione uomo-computer. Durante il giorno faccio esperimenti sulla percezione tattile di un nuovo tipo di feedback e studio finlandese (mi ero dimenticata quanto difficile fosse studiare una nuova lingua, detesto la grammatica!)

Mi rimane tempo per divertirmi? Si.

Lo scorso weekend sono stata in crociera a Stoccolma. Ho visto la città solo per 6 ore, una delle quali l'ho trascorsa chiusa dentro al museo del Premio Nobel, il museo che preferisco in assoluto nel mondo. Ero già stata a Stoccolma, ma non ricordo granché (no, non ero piccola). Fortunatamente ci sono foto che aiutano la mia memoria! Ho capito che non amo le crociere, sento ancora le onde e mi gira la testa nonostante siano già 3 giorni che sono sulla terra ferma. Preferisco di gran lunga le barche a vela, dove senti la brezza e il vento sulla pelle.

Ho dei buoni propositi per l'anno nuovo? Si.
Li condividerò con voi? No. Potrebbero non avverarsi :)

Vi dirò soltanto che ho grandi progetti, progetti grossi e ambiziosi che, incrociando le dita, mi porteranno ancora in giro per il mondo. Quello che so per certo è che il mio lavoro qui non è passato in sordina e ieri ho ricevuto un complimento molto inaspettato ma molto apprezzato dal mio relatore in Italia.

Ma ora basta parlare, andate a vedervi un po' di foto della Svezia!
