So, I guess it's time to go home soon. Only 2 days left, according to the countdown here and I'm ready to board that plane.
The weather here has been really bad lately. Not too cold (about 3-5°C average), but windy and cloudy. It's been I think about a months since I last saw the sun and it's seriously bothering me. I've been sleeping a lot, and despite that, I'm constantly tired, depressed, not motivated. Plus I keep seeing pictures of Verona with light blue skies, no clouds, sun, daylight, christmas markets, christmas lights,... all things that are missing in Helsinki! (Yes, even though we are in Finland, home of Santa Claus, it's the least christmasy place I've ever seen!)

On a happier note, my BFF came to visit this weekend!! She flew in from London on Thursday night and spent a few days with me, touring Helsinki, relaxing in the sauna and going to the beach. I got to see places I usually don't go to, and especially see my friend Elena, which I hadn't seen since February!

Tomorrow is Packing Day and Wednesday is Goodbye Day. Most of the people I hang out here I will see again next year, but there is one friend I will really miss: Roberta!

Mi sa che è arrivata l'ora di andare a casa. Mancano solo 2 giorni, secondo il countdown qui a sinistra e io sono pronta per imbarcarmi.
Il tempo qui fa veramente schifo. Non c'è freddissimo (3-5°C di media), ma c'è un sacco di vento e nuvole nuvole nuvole! Credo sia un mese che non vedo il sole e sinceramente mi da parecchio fastidio sta cosa. Continuo a dormire, e ciononostante sono sempre stanca, depressa e demotivata. In più continuo a vedere foto di Verona con cieli azzurri, zero nuvole, luce del sole, mercatini di natale, luci di natale... tutte cose che qui mancano. (Si, siamo in Finlandia, casa di Babbo Natale, ed è il posto meno natalizio che io abbia mai visto!!)

Ma ci sono aspetti positivi! La mia migliore amica è venuta a trovarmi questo weekend!! E' arrivata da Londra giovedì notte e abbiamo trascorso alcuni giorni insieme, visitando Helsinki, rilassandoci in sauna e andando in spiaggia. Sono riuscita a vedere posti in cui di solito non vado e sopratutto ho passato del tempo con lei, Elena, che non vedevo da febbraio!

Domani si fa la valigia, e mercoledì bisogna salutare un po' di gente. Molte delle persone con cui esco qui le rivedrò anche a gennaio, ma c'è un'amica che mi mancherà davvero: Roberta!!

Wild North

As many of you know, I went to Lapland a few weeks ago. It was absolutely AMAZING!!
We travelled north by train then took a bus and arrived to destination after a 14 hour journey.

There wasn't much snow, but we were still able to go on the husky sleigh ride and reindeer sleigh ride. The place we stayed in was very well organized: we had small cottages with a fireplace, there was a main building with a restaurant where they served typical food (reindeer, salmon, meatballs) and a sauna building. all of this was on a frozen lake surrounded by a forest.

One day we were able to go to one of the few mountains Finland has and some of us went skiing, other (like me) went sledging! The last day we also went to Rovaniemi and Santa's Village and we actually got a picture with him. What a dream come true for someone like me who absolutely LOVES christmas!

But I must say that the best part of the trip was being able to see northern lights. I was in my cottage, chatting with some friends when they came to call us to go outside and see the magic. WOW. To see these light, dancing in the sky, changing shapes and colors, to see so many falling stars behind it, it was simply unbelievable. I had shivers down my back and couldn't stop smiling. I was out in the cold and the dark for about an hour just enjoying the show.

I couldn't have asked for more from that trip!

Come molti di voi sanno, sono andata in Lapponia un paio di settimane fa. E' stato assolutamente incredibile! Siamo andati al nord con il treno poi abbiamo preso un autobus e siamo arrivati  a destinazione dopo un viaggio di 14 ore.

Non c'era molta neve, ma siamo stati riusciti a fare un giro in slitta con gli husky e con le renne. Il posto in cui alloggiavamo era molto ben organizzato: avevamo dei piccoli cottage con il camino, c'era un edificio principale con un ristorante dove ci hanno cucinato piatti tipici (renna, salmone, polpette di carne) e un edificio con la sauna. Tutto questo era vicino a un lago ghiacciato circondato da una foresta.
Un giorno siamo andati a una delle poche montagne che si sono in Finlandia e alcuni di noi hanno sciato, altri (come me) sono andati con lo slittino giù dalla pista! L'ultimo giorno siamo anche andati a Rovaniemi e al Villaggio di Babbo Natale e abbiamo fatto una foto con lui. Un sogno che diventa realtà per una come me che AMA il Natale!

Ma devo dire che la parte migliore del viaggio è stata essere in grado di vedere l'aurora boreale. Ero nel mio cottage, chiacchieravo con alcuni amici quando sono venuti a chiamarci per andare fuori e vedere la magia. WOW. Vedere queste luci che danzavano nel cielo, cambiando forme e colori, vedere tante stelle cadenti... è stato semplicemente incredibile. Avevo i brividi lungo la schiena e non riuscivo a smettere di sorridere. Sono stata fuori al freddo e al buio per circa un'ora a godermi lo spettacolo.

Non avrei potuto chiedere di più da quel viaggio!

I apologize for being such a disaster at keeping things up to date. Anyway, here it goes:


So, what's the Ravintola päivä? 
It's an international event held in different cities, where normal people improvise a restaurant for the day and earn some money. Well, what a great occasion for some broke exchange students! So, with a group of friends we decided to make italian food: pizza, panzerotti, pasta, chocolate salami, chocolate crostata and apple pie. 


Prices were really cheap and lots of our friends preferred our restaurant to cooking their lunch so in the end we made quite a bit of money! And the best part, was that there were also lots of finns that came!!

Mi scuso per il continuo ritardo con cui scrivo.


Allora, cos'è questo  Ravintola päivä? 
E' un evento internazionale tenuto in diverse città dove gente comune si improvvisa ristoratore per un giorno e guadagna un po' di soldi. Beh, un'occasione perfetta per degli studenti in scambio poveri! Quindi, con un gruppo di amici abbiamo deciso di cucinare cibo italiano: pizza, panzerotti napoletani, pasta tricolore, salame di cioccolato, crostata di cioccolata e torta di mele. 


I prezzi erano davvero economici e un sacco di nostri amici hanno preferito venire a mangiare da noi piuttosto che cucinare quindi abbiamo fatto un po' di soldini. La parte migliore è che sono venuti anche un sacco di finlandesi!!
